Active ageing
In 2009, the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River was the first regional Local Government Authority to complete an Age Friendly Community Study with funding received from the Department for Communities and South West Development Commission.
The project is based on World Health Organisation (WHO) methodology,The Western Australian Age Friendly Toolkit, and has the aim of ascertaining how age-friendly our Shire is in relation to outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, respect and inclusion, social participation, communication and information, civic participation and employment and community support and health services.
Key Outcomes
Overall the Shire was deemed to be age friendly within the majority of study areas, however it was acknowledged that improvements could be made across:
- Housing affordability and options
- Public toilets
- Footpaths
- Accessible parking and drop off points
- Safe pedestrian crossings
- Road maintenance and safety.
Future Plans
Recommendations within the Age Friendly Community Report will provide a blue print for strategies to enhance the age friendliness of our shire and are currently being integrated into other areas such as the Integrated Pathway Plan and Supertowns planning.
The Shire is currently developing the Active Ageing Plan; a program that focus’s on addressing the key areas identified in the Age Friendly Community Study Report.
Some aspects of the plan include:
- Annual Connecting Seniors Expo which provides an opportunity to celebrate Seniors week and learn more about clubs, associations and services for seniors in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.
- Seniors Safety workshops, two workshops (one in Margaret River, one in Augusta) to promote all aspects of safety in our communities and homes.
- Supporting new initiatives such as the formation of the U3A.
- Increasing accessible and inclusive recreational activities within the Shire.
- Ongoing feedback and consultation through the Community Access and Inclusion Reference Group.
The Shire is committed to a culture of innovation, quality and continuous improvement and as such appreciates public feedack. If you would like to provide feedback on seniors access and inclusion issues, please do so by contacting the Community Development Officer on (08) 9780 5239 or email estatz@amrshire.wa.gov.au.
