Community safety and crime prevention

A safe community is a place that is attractive to live, work, visit and do business. Perceptions of community safety, real or perceived, impact on the way people feel and interact in their community.

The Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan 2007 – 2010 is both a strategic and practical document that provides a framework for local government, local community groups and key government agencies to implement initiatives that will improve community safety over a three year period.

The aim of this plan is to increase community safety and reduce crime through:

  • Positive intervention with parents in early childhood development;
  • Strengthening communities and revitalising neighbourhoods;
  • Early intervention with juveniles and adult offenders who are involved in the criminal justice system;
  • Environmental design, building design and suburban infrastructure development to reduce the opportunity for crimes to occur;
  • Crime and safety issues related to wider social and health problems (unemployment, abuse of alcohol and drugs);
  • Interventions to reduce re-offending.

Key outcomes to date include:

  • Crash Car Display
  • SAM the Speed Trailer
  • Parent-teen Workshops
  • Youth Leadership Initiatives
  • Formation of a Liquor Forum
  • Management of Leavers Celebrations for the SW Region and Shire of Augusta-Margaret River
  • Implementation of the Liquor Forum Group

SAM the Speed Trailer

Speed issues in your area? The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has a speed trailer (SAM) that can be booked out by the public to target areas where there are speeding issues within the community. Trailer bookings can be made by contacting the Shire's Infrasructure Services Technical Officer on 9780 5274.

Future Plans

The Shire is currently working with the WA Police and local community to develop the 2010-2013 Community Safety & Crime Prevention Plan. This plan will introduce new initiatives that address current issues within the region.

  • Further implementation of the Driver Aware program, promoting the ‘Drive Safe” message. This initiative will be incorporate the Crash Car Trailer and Speed Alert Mobile (SAM) Trailer
  • Incorporation of “Designing Out Crime” principles in Shire planning processes
  • Continuation of effective management of Leavers Celebrations in the Southwest and local area
