Salary packaging arrangements
Salary packaging is a flexible remuneration strategy whereby you (as an employee) agree to forego part of your (pre-tax) salary in return for the Council (as your employer) agreeing to provide you with various benefits of a similar value (e.g. paying certain expenses on your behalf).
Salary packaging can be a tax effective strategy for you and may lead to an increase in your take-home pay, for the following reasons:
- The benefits you receive are paid for by the Council from your pre-tax salary (as opposed to you paying for them with post-tax salary); and
- The amount of income tax you pay on your net salary (after benefits), is reduced.
Salary packaging is not compulsory. Your own circumstances will determine whether salary packaging is affordable and of benefit to you or your family. In particular, in deciding whether to enter into a Salary Packaging Arrange with the Council, you will need to ascertain what amount of take-home pay you require to meet your regular living commitments.
