Shire commended at Coastal Awards
20 November 2009
The Augusta-Margaret River Shire recently received a 'Certificate of Commendation' for Coastal Development and Design Award for the Augusta Foreshore Path.
The award was presented for an outstanding coastal development, built facility, infrastructure or coastal design project that demonstrates sustainable design principles.
The popular Augusta Foreshore Path, constructed by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, provides access to the Blackwood River foreshore while protecting the natural environment.
The path, constructed after extensive site surveys, design consideration and public consultation, was developed with minimal impact on the natural environment and positioned to minimise visual impact on the beautiful scenary.
The path has increased sustainable recreational use of the area, reduced human impact and provides education on the area’s environmental and heritage values through signage.
The project received overwhelming public support and provided a unique opportunity for partnerships to be developed between the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, local businesses and the community.
Shire President Ray Colyer said the foreshore path provides a unique eco experience opportunity for visitors and residents to enjoy the beauty of the Blackwood River and Augusta.
“The Shire would like to thank our vital funding partners in this project, the South West Development Commission, Australian Government Envirofund, Country Pathways Scheme and Coastwest Grant Scheme,” Cr Colyer said.
“The Shire also wishes to acknowledge the generous bequeath made from the Jack and Lena Ryall Trust that will fund the final boardwalk and river path link, and to thank the Augusta Community Development Association, Leeuwin Lions Club, Augusta Chamber of Commerce, volunteers, staff and contractors who brought this project to fruition.
“A special thank you to Brian Holland a Shire Leading Hand Carpenter for all his work on the boardwalks and James Owens for planting all plants along the pathway.”
The Shire is also encouraging the community to assist with rehabilitation of the foreshore vegetation including weed management along the pathway. For further information or to volunteer contact Merryn Delaney on 9780 5252.
