Local emergency management committee
The Shire has developed plans and structures to bring together government, voluntary and private agencies in a coordinated way to deal with major emergencies though its Local Emerency Management Committee (LEMC). Plans cover the whole spectrum of emergency needs, including prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
The Shire’s LEMC is a committee established under the provisions of the Emergency Management Act 2005 that advises and assists the Shire in ensuring that local emergency arrangements are established for its district.
The LEMC membership draws on the Shire of Augusta – Margaret River, WA Police (Augusta and Margaret River), FESA Volunteer Fire and Rescue (Augusta and Margaret River), St John Ambulance (Augusta and Margaret River) Shire of Augusta – Margaret River Bush Fire Brigades, Department for Child Protection, Department of Health, Volunteer Marine Rescue (Augusta and Margaret River), Department of Environment of Conservation and community groups.
At their quarterly meetings, the committee takes a strategic approach to reducing the impact of emergencies on the community and in being prepared in the event that they do occur. Part of the preparation is holding mock exercises to test the efficiency of the procedures of agencies responding to or recovering from an emergency and to make improvements where deemed necessary.
