Hairdressing establishments are required by law to comply with the Hairdressing Establishment Regulations 1972 which outline basic health and hygiene standards in order to prevent the spread of infectious disease such as hepatitis B, C, and HIV/AIDS.

Can hairdressers use cut throat razors?
Cut throat razors with a non-changeable blade are not permitted for use in any commercial hairdressing establishment due to the risk of spreading blood borne viruses from one client to another. Where cut throat razors are used, the blade must be single use and disposed of into a sharps container after using on each client.
Can a hairdresser cut the hair of a customer who has head lice?
Whether or not a hairdresser cuts the hair of a customer with head lice is up to the individual hairdresser, and whether or not they have the time and facilities to treat an infected client. If you or your child has head lice it is advisable that you discuss this with your hairdresser prior to getting a hair cut.
