Better Beginnings (newborns, toddlers and kindergarten)

Better Beginnings is a West Australian family literacy program that aims to encourage reading, singing, playing and writing and talking together at home through free reading packs.

As part of the Better Beginning program every baby born in the Shire receives a free yellow pack, two year olds are given an orange pack and every child receives a green bag as they enter kindergarten.  All packs come with a library bag, an age appropriate book, and fun literacy related activities to enjoy at home.

The Shire contributes funds towards Better Beginnings each year and a Librarian visits all the schools to promote the program. The libraries’ role in this program highlights the Shire’s commitment to encouraging children to enjoy sharing stories while simultaneously improving their listening and language skills.

Better Beginnings is sponsored by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, State Library of Western Australia and Rio Tinto’s Future Fund.
