Next week a group of Shire of Augusta Margaret River councillors and staff will join over 40 Margaret River residents in the Refugee Rations Challenge as part of Refugee Week (18 – 25 June).

Organisers, Amnesty Margaret River, aim to raise $5,000 to assist refugees in Perth who do not have any financial or family support.

Councillors Kylie Kennaugh, Pam Townshend, Felicity Haynes and Shire President Ian Earl are amongst those who have signed up for the challenge to live on the same rations issued by the UN to refugees in a Syrian refugee camp for five days.

Rations for the five days include; rice (300g), lentils (120g), dried chickpeas (60g), tinned sardines (90g), tinned kidney beans (285g), flour (250g) and vegetable oil (215 ml).

Alcohol and coffee are not included.

Participants fundraise by paying a fine for any ‘slip ups’ or can get sponsored for consuming allowances outside of the rations.

Councillor Felicity Haynes said the challenge is a good awareness lesson on how privileged we are here in the South West.

Shire President Ian Earl congratulated Amnesty Margaret River for their enthusiasm and efforts in setting up the challenge.

“Amnesty Margaret River are doing a tremendous job in getting members of our community behind this initiative and shining the light on families and individuals experiencing very tough circumstances.”

Mr Earl also thanked Riverfresh IGA for generously sponsoring the rations kits.

Funds raised will go to the Coalition for Asylum Seekers Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) who provide specialised welfare and advocacy assistance to asylum seekers, refugees and detainees in Western Australia.

Help Amnesty Margaret River reach their target by making a donation for a team member ration kit or paying a ‘slip up’ fine here http://www.carad.org.au/events-feed/2017/6/7/margaret-river-rations-challenge-team-2017
