Change room facilities at the Augusta Margaret River Football Clubhouse will undergo much needed upgrades at the beginning of December, providing new showers, toilets and change rooms for a growing range of users.
Shire President Pam Townshend said the project had strategic importance and addressed a number of needs.
“These works are an important component of the overall Master Plan for upgrading Gloucester Park and are being considered in parallel to the Cultural Centre (HEART) Project.”
Plans include converting the southern end of the football club building into a second change room, to accommodate both home and visiting teams in the one place.
Traditionally, visiting teams have used dilapidated change room facilities across the car park near the old squash courts. These will be demolished next year as part of upgrades to the cultural centre.
Asbestos cement material will be removed and existing septic tanks and leach drains decommissioned in favour of connection to deep sewerage.
Cr Townshend said the existing facilities were well below industry standard for hosting teams from other towns and improvements would benefit a range of users beyond just the football community.
“The new change room development will complete a West Australian Football League (WAFL) standard ground and will be highly regarded in the South West Football League as the umpires and visiting sides will be housed in one building,” she said.
“This will give a much better chance of inviting a WAFL game to the Shire in the future.
“It will not only provide the three senior Augusta Margaret River Football Club sides with a base, but will also be used by the Masters Rules and Women’s sides, four youth sides and junior sides including Auskick.
“The Footy Club will continue to be a multi-use development, with Rugby, Little Athletics, T’ai Chi and exercise groups able to access the rooms, and modern toilets available for larger events at Gloucester Park, such as the Agricultural Society Show, horse shows and other outdoor events.”
Developed over a number of years in full consultation and agreement with the MR Hawks Football Club, the project is expected to cost $309,000 and due for completion in March 2018.
