People with mobility limitations will be able to dip their toes into ocean this summer with the Shire of Augusta Margaret River providing a beach wheelchair at the Rivermouth in Prevelly.
The wheelchair is available for the duration of lifeguarding season and can be used by anyone who has a permanent disability, a temporary disability or reduced mobility due to age or other circumstances.
Shire President Pamela Townshend said the beach wheelchair can be taken over sand, grass, gravel as well as in water and is a great way to access the beach for paddling, swimming, fishing or sitting at the water’s edge.
“Recreating at the beach is such a wonderful part of life in Margaret River that so many of us take for granted,” she said.
“This free all access wheelchair ensures all community members and visitors can enjoy the simple pleasure of visiting the beach with friends and family.”
The wheelchair features low tyre pressure to reduce the risk of puncture and is designed to be pushed by someone other than the person sitting in it (ie. not self-propelled).
To request use of the beach wheelchair, speak to the Lifeguards during patrol hours 9.30am to 5pm, 15 December 2018 to 26 April 2019.
Bookings not required.
