A Total Fire Ban has been declared by DFES for the Shire of Augusta Margaret River effective from midnight tonight (Friday 22 May 2020, 11:59pm) and is likely to remain in place through the weekend.

This announcement supersedes the conditions applied to the Section 46 Notice issued earlier today by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Chief Bushfire Control Officer.

A Total Fire Ban means:

  • You must not light, add fuel to or use any fires in the open air
  • All open fires for the purpose of cooking or camping are not allowed
  • Hot work such as metal work, grinding, welding, soldering, gas cutting or similar is not allowed

You must not undertake any other activities that may start a fire.

The ban has been declared due to a severe weather forecast issued across WA. The forecast of dry, warm and gusty winds predicted from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday, prior to the arrival of any rain in an approaching cold front, pose a risk to the containment of any fires that are currently in the landscape.

Penalties for ignoring Total Fire Bans include fines of up to $25,000 and/or 12 months jail.
