The Shire of Augusta Margaret River’s ‘A Class’ reserve is located at the northern entrance to the Margaret River town on the western side of Bussell Highway, and has considerable ecological, social and cultural values. It includes a section of the Margaret River and its foreshore, and provides valuable habitat for threatened species, including the Western Ringtail Possum, and Black Cockatoo species.  The reserve was originally gazetted in 1924, but has not been formally named.  Please view Map of Reserve.

Formally naming the ‘A Class’ Reserve recognises the importance of this reserve for its cultural, social and environmental values, provides a sense of identity, and fosters community ownership and stewardship.

Following consultation with the Undalup Association and local community groups, it is proposed to formally name the reserve ‘Nguraren Kalleep’ (pronounced Naren Kah-leap), meaning ‘Ringtail Camp’ in Wadandi dialect. This is in recognition of the Wadandi cultural values of the Margaret River, and the reserve’s significant habitat value for the critically endangered Western Ringtail Possum (Nguraren).

At its Ordinary Meeting on 27 November 2019, Council was supportive of the new name and recommended it be advertised for community comment.

Following the naming of the reserve, the community will be invited to a naming ceremony to recognise the reserve, its values and its meaning to the Wadandi people. The Shire of Augusta Margaret River will also work with the Undalup Association and Nature Conservation Margaret River Region to develop interpretive signage for the reserve.

You are invited to comment on the proposal via the submission form.  Please send via email to or by post to PO Box 61 Margaret River 6285 by 3pm Wednesday 12 February 2020.

Scheme water cannot be guaranteed during a bushfire. The Water Corporation is prepared for bushfire season, however, cannot guarantee that water pressure or water supply will be maintained in the event of a bushfire. Extreme demand, fire damage and power cuts can all result in a total loss of water. If you plan to stay and defend your property during a bushfire. You must have your own independent water supply and pumping capability, and must not rely on scheme water. Full details about how to prepare for bushfire season can be found at
