Keeping and welfare of cats

CatYou are required by law to register your cat.  Cats over the age of six months are required to be registered with a local government.  If you care for your cat, you should register your pet with your local council, this will enable Rangers to contact you if your pet strays, is lost or injured.





  • Cats over the age of six months are required to be registered with a local government registering your cat assists authorities in contacting you in case it strays and/or is hurt, sick or lost;
  • It is an offence to have an unregistered cat;
  • All cats are required to wear a collar with a registration tag (quick release collars are available should your cat become entangled);
  • If you have lost the cat tag a replacement tag can be purchased for $2.00.
  • All cats over the age of 6 months are required to be sterilised (unless vet certificate for medical grounds or holding a breeders permit);
  • All cats over the age of 6 months are required to be microchipped (unless vet certificate for medical grounds);
  • Anyone wishing to breed cats are required to obtain a permit from their Local Council and meet specific requirements;
  • A person must not breed cats unless the person is an approved cat breeder (penalty $5,000);
  • No cat is to be transferred unless it is sterilised and mircochipped or a voucher is provided to the new owner covering the costs.

Registration Fees

Registration fees can be paid at the Margaret River or Augusta Council offices.

Local Laws are currently being developed in relation to the keeping and welfare of cats. These may include:

  • The requirement to obtain a permit to keep more than 3 cats on a property;
  • Restrictions in regards to the movement of cats;
  • Guidelines for cats being a nuisance;
  • Cat impound fees and infringements;
  • Rehoming/destruction of unclaimed cats.
