Important dates

Install fire breaks & reduce fuel loading on your land by 1 December
Restricted burning period 9 November - 21 December
Prohibited burning period 22 December - 13 March
Restricted burning period 14 March - 12 May

Your property must comply by 1 December each year

The annual Bush Fire Management Notice sets out the responsibilities residents and visitors have in reducing fire risk in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

The Notice includes important dates*, fire season restriction and prohibitions, your legal requirements, a firebreak installation guide, a fuel hazard reduction guide, preparedness requirements for land owners, a list of definitions and information relating to the various property types. *Dates are subject to change - these will be advertised on the the Shire's homepage and in the local paper. 

Please ensure you are aware of the requirements for your land, and assist the Shire and volunteer bush fire brigades by undertaking fuel reduction works prior to and during the burning season. This includes cleaning of leaf litter from roofs and gutters, clearing flammable materials away from buildings and haystacks etc for a distance of 20 metres, and planting fire retardant (resistant) species as part of landscaping. 

More information and permits to burn can be sought from one of the Shire's many Fire Control Officers as listed in the Notice. The Shire's Rangers are also Fire Control Officers, providing administration of the Bush Fires Act 1954 and Regulations and public education and advice on fire prevention and bush fire safety awareness.

Please be aware that should you be convicted of setting fire to the bush without a permit as per Section 17(6)(a) of the Bush Fires Act 1954  you may be penalised up to $5000.

Variation to Notice

A Variation to Notice can be requested if it meets certain conditions as outlined in the Bush Fire Management Notice.

All requests must be made by the property owner or person authorised to act upon the owners behalf.  Individual requests are required for each property and must be submitted to the Shire by 22 November. Application form here.

Variation approvals only carry over into future fire seasons if confirmed in writing by the Shire.
