The Shire is extending an invitation to suitably experienced South West artists to submit an expression of interest for the development of banner artworks that will be displayed on the Main Street of Margaret River.
This project aims to commission two sets of original banner designs from artists to complement the revitalised main street of Margaret River, contributing to and building upon Margaret River’s unique, strong, and vibrant sense of place. It is anticipated that only one artist’s banners will be displayed at a time, with the entire set of banners to be alternated once per year.
We seek artworks that:
• Create a strong and vibrant sense of place for the Margaret River townsite and surrounding region.
• Reflect positivity.
• Celebrate the uniqueness and importance of our natural environment recognising the endemic flora and fauna of the region.
In addition, artworks need to be:
• Designed to have longevity.
• Adopt an artistic/creative direction for the new banner content rather than promotional messaging.
• Be attractive from a distance.
With 14 banner posts and a total of 28 banners (two banners per post) to be located along Bussell Highway throughout Margaret River town centre this is a significant commission with a high degree of public visibility.
Scope of artwork:
The scope of this project is to create a unique suite of two to three artworks that will form one of two sets of banner designs reproduced and displayed on six-month rotation within the main street of Margaret River, utilised for up to a five-year period.
It is estimated that two to three designs would be repeated across the 14 banner posts. The two to three banner artworks* are required to be complementary in terms of style, colour, and design and of a format that seamlessly translates into a digital design file (as indicated in attachment A).
The best arrangement of the banners up the street (e.g., alternating, in blocks, colour transition or other) can be determined by the artist but the artwork suite must represent the project objectives, as stated, in a manner that suits final banner application and is clearly of the artist’s style.
The fee available for each suite of two to three artworks is $4,500*. Artists need to submit a fee proposal (inclusive of GST) for development of commissioned banner artworks. This amount is to cover all costs associated with the artwork production including materials, labour and artists’ fees but excluding cost of producing the banners themselves (including graphic design).
*A total of $9,000 is available for two suites of banner artworks.
