Prohibited Burning Period Starts One Week Early
The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has advised the Prohibited Burning Period will begin a week early, which means from 12.01am on Saturday 14 December 2024 no fires can be lit in open air at any time or in any location within the shire.
During the Prohibited Burning Period which will be in effect until Friday,14 March 2025 (unless varied), fuel reduction burns, garden refuse burns, campfires, firepits, wood/solid fuel BBQs and pizza ovens are all banned. Permits to Burn are also cancelled.
The Shire’s Community Emergency Services Manager, Adam Jasper, said the decision to start the Prohibited Burning Period a week early was due to seasonal conditions making the environment very dry and little or no rain forecast for the foreseeable future. He urged the community to be vigilant and encouraged all residents to have a Bushfire Plan.
“Our regions stunning natural environment, comes with a level of bushfire risk that residents and visitors alike must be aware of.”
“A bushfire can impact any home in our shire so it’s essential for everyone to have a bushfire plan. It’s one of the most critical and valuable things you can do and it only takes 15 minutes to make a few key decisions about what you will do if there’s a bushfire, and it will help you to avoid making a last minute decision that could prove deadly.”
Adam noted additional measures such as Total Fire Bans and Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans will be used when warranted to prevent bushfires starting
