As at 2006/07 the Shire’s combined emissions from heavy, light and commuter transport was 861 tonnes for that year.
Over 70% of all of the trips we make to, from and within Margaret River are made as the driver of a vehicle. As our population grows so too will car use with planned growth contributing an additional 45,000 vehicle trips by 2035, if car use remains at today’s levels.
It is estimated that for every litre of petrol we use in our vehicles, we produce 2.7 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions and that over a year, a medium sized car will produce approximately 4 tonnes of C02. In order to offset these emissions we would each need to plant approximately 28 trees per year.
Whilst improved vehicle technology may reduce the emissions vehicles produce over time, the most effective method of reducing emissions is by using our cars less frequently, and utilising walking and cycling (or a scooter or skateboard!!!) as a means of transportation for short trips.
The Shire is part of the electric Vehicle highway project and has agreed to enter into arrangements with the RAC to develop charging points for electric vehicles at Margaret River and Augusta.
The Shire purchases ‘carbon off-sets’ which fund the planting of trees in the Yarra Yarra and Godwana link environmental corridors
