Wadandi Track Investment Welcome, But More Needed

Million Dollar Upgrade to Wadandi Track Announced

Shire President Julia Meldrum has welcomed the announcement that the State Government will make a $17.5 million investment in the Wadandi Track, as part its $165 million Outdoor Adventure Tourism package. 

The Wadandi Track is a multipurpose walking and bike riding trail which showcases the heritage of the former Busselton to Flinders Bay Railway. It currently runs between Cowaramup and Sebbes Road and was renamed in 2015 to recognise traditional landowners.  

The investment will see the track extended to nearly 110 kilometres, creating a new outdoor experience for local and visitors.   The $17.5M grant will be paid over the next four years, and Shire Officers will meet with the Department of Transport later this month to begin discussions about project delivery.

Julia said the investment was recognition of Augusta Margaret River’s popularity as a tourism destination and its unique natural environment, but renewed calls for increased and ongoing funding for the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

“Margaret River is positioned as one of the jewels in the States tourism crown and we now have direct flights now arriving 7 days into the region,” said Julia.

“The investment in the Wadandi Track will provide yet another reason for people to visit the region, but that also puts pressure on our infrastructure, facilities and the environment,” she said.

“The Shire is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment and biodiversity of the region, but we also need the State to commit more funding to the conservation and management of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, so it is protected to for future generations.”
