The Shire of Augusta Margaret River is encouraging residents to continue sorting their waste and recycling as usual, despite temporary disruptions caused by a factory fire at Cleanaway Perth Materials Recovery Facility (Perth MRF) on Monday.

Waste Education and Project Officer Jackie Dickson said that the waste team is awaiting further information as to how the Shire’s recycling services will be impacted but urge the community to continue recycling as normal.

“The disruption to recycling is a temporary situation that is being addressed by both the Shire and the contractor Cleanaway, so we encourage residents to continue sorting their waste and recycling as normal.

“Cleanaway provided advice to the Shire that they are in the process of identifying alternate waste processing and disposal arrangements to continue recycling waste from the yellow lid bins,” she said.

In a statement to the Shire, Cleanaway stated their commitment to rebuilding the Perth MRF and provided assurances the process will begin as soon as it is safe to assess the site.

Cleanaway, process comingled recycling materials collected from yellow lid bins across the Shire and other select local government areas in the South West and Perth.

Composting of the Shire’s FOGO (lime green lid bins) is undertaken at a different facility and is unaffected.
