Margaret River Recreation Centre has launched a free virtual fitness program in an effort to keep community members moving during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Centre fitness staff will be delivering video workouts via the Recreation Centre Facebook page to ensure physical and mental health is maintained while staying at home.

Recreation Centre Operations Manager, Dylan Brown said providing access to online classes gives the community a virtual place to gather and safely connect with others while exercising.

“We understand everyone has a lot to juggle at the moment but remaining active is more vital than ever to keep our community healthy”, Mr Brown said.

“While the majority of our time is now being spent at home, limiting sedentary time and getting up regularly to move is extremely important.

“Exercise is medicine, it can help support our immune system and boost our mental health during these uncertain times.”

The initial suite of online classes will feature weekly workout releases from the Recreation Centre’s usual timetable including Pilates, Yoga, HIIT, Pump, Step/Combat and general movement and stretching classes.

Recreation Services Coordinator Seb Miller said classes will consist of short videos with instructions and full length ‘virtual style’ classes to keep you working out alongside the fitness team.

“Our short freestyle classes are easy for anyone to follow along with and will be released on our Facebook page every Monday, Wednesday and Friday”, Mr Miller said.

“We’ve made sure our classes cater for a range of fitness levels and demographics including exercises for the elderly, pre and post-natal, and those with injury management programs.

“We’re bringing all your favourite classes, instructors and the colourful group fitness room right to your home.

“We might not be able to see each other, but we’re still here to help.”

Local Exercise Physiologist Amy Smith will also be sharing some professional guidance, as well as tailored home exercise regimes and tips for all community members and those with musculoskeletal and or chronic health conditions.

Each week there will be new full length videos posted on the Recreation Centre Facebook page directly linked to video galleries, with all online classes available on both desktop and mobile devices.

Community members are encouraged to provide suggestions and feedback on the virtual classes through Facebook or by email at recreation@amrshire.wa.gov.au.
