Undalup Wadandi Cultural Custodians and the Augusta Margaret River Shire are hosting a community information session about the Taalinup Boya Healthy Country Plan, including proposed path from Dead Finish to Cape Leeuwin at 5.30pm on Tuesday 20 July at the Augusta Community Resource Centre.
The Shire has constructed a path from Flinders Bay towards Cape Leeuwin, with a formal trail developed as far as Dead Finish. The remaining sections of the pathway cover sections of country that have been identified as having significant cultural value, with archaeological evidence revealing artefacts and ceremonial sites. The Taalinup Boya Healthy Country Plan was developed in response to significance of these sites and the strong desire of the community for the path to be continued.
Undalup Wadandi Cultural Custodian Zac Webb and David Guilfoyle from Applied Archaeology International will present details of the project, outlining the results of field surveys, recommendations for the paths and trails development, future management of the landscape and protection and rehabilitation of significant cultural sites and the environment.
Cultural Custodian Zac Webb believes that the Healthy Country Plan has been an excellent process to help guide decisions to protect the cultural, environmental and social values of Taalinup Boya.
“This partnership allows us to work closely together to implement land management practices guided by both Traditional Ecological Knowledge and western scientific practices, using our Continuous Connection to Country and Culture,” he said.
Nick Logan, Director Sustainable Development and Infrastructure at the Shire agrees.
“The goal of the Plan is to protect Taalinup Boya Country. We want to finish the path to the lighthouse, but also protect the area into the future, ensuring these special places aren’t damaged. It’s exciting to have this Plan to help the Shire and Council consider the future of this amazing landscape.” he explained.
