The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has committed to a significant boost in road safety starting immediately.

The speed limit along Margaret River Main Street is now 40kph, with Cowaramup Main Street scheduled to drop from 50kph to 40kph by the end of February. Main Roads WA is considering a 50 kph limit for Witchcliffe.

The Shire’s Manager Asset Services, David Nicholson, explains that road safety is a high priority for the Shire – particularly over the holiday season.

“During the holiday season the Shire is bursting with holidaymakers. We want everyone to stay safe and bringing down the speed through our main streets protects all road users but particularly pedestrians and cyclists,” he says.

In addition to speed limits, the Shire will be undertaking extensive road upgrades from December to June 2022.

‘We’ll be extending the width of the seal on some of our rural roads that have a history of “run off road” crashes to make these roads safer. Audible edge lines (rumble strips) will give drivers a clear warning and more recovery time should they drift onto the road shoulder,” he adds.

An audible edge line has already been installed on Wallcliffe Road between Mansfield Avenue and Caves Road. More rumble strips will be added to Carters, Mowen, Rosa Brook and Rosa Glen Roads between January and June 2022.  These works are fully funded by a $5M federal and state government Regional Road Safety Program grant.

Road reconstruction will also be carried out on sections of Jindong-Treeton Road, Warner Glen Road and Cowaramup Bay Road over the summer. Upgrading of Leeuwin Road in Augusta is nearing completion.

Mr. Nicholson implores drivers to be safe this summer.

“Please celebrate safely this summer. Don’t drink and drive, keep your hands on the wheel – not on your phone – and your eyes on the road. Stay focused on what really matters,” he advises.

Further information about the works schedule for the 2022 road upgrades will be available soon.
