An important message from the Chief Bushfire Control Officer

Staying during the summer bushfire season

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River will enter our Prohibited Burning Period at midnight on 22 December. From this date there are to be no open-air flames, including campfires, wood fired barbecues, pizza ovens and fire pits.

All current Permits to Burn are cancelled and the window of opportunity to burn garden refuse has closed until the commencement of the Restricted Burning Period in Autumn.

As outlined in the Shire’s Firebreak Notice, firebreaks should have been installed by 30 November and need to be maintained until 12 May 2026. To ensure fire trucks can access your property, these should be at least 3 metres wide with a vertical clearance of 4 metres.

Asset Protection Zones (APZ) should also be in place for every household and maintained all year round. Clear your gutters of leaves and debris, remove tree branches that might overhang your roof, and store flammable materials away from your home.

To keep up to date in the event of an emergency, install the Emergency WA App onto your phone tablet or computer. This is the official and most-up to date source of information.

Now is also the time to review your Fire Plan and if you haven’t got one, then take 15 minutes on Emergency WA to prepare one for yourself and family. Overall, I urge you to Plan and Prepare what you are going to do in a Bushfire situation.

Although our bushfire volunteers are well trained and resourced, we cannot be everywhere for everyone.

So please stay safe over this fire season and do the right thing.
