Anne Shepherdson Courtyard Opened
The Anne Shepherdson Courtyard at the Margaret River HEART – Nala Bardip Mia was officially opened over the weekend, honouring the legacy of one of the region’s most passionate arts champions.
Arts Margaret River and the Shire of Augusta Margaret River unveiled the revitalised courtyard - a welcoming outdoor space designed to enhance comfort, creativity and community connection, on Sunday 15 March.
The courtyard’s transformation, including the installation of a new retractable feature for all-weather comfort, was delivered thanks to funding from the Government of Western Australia – Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
The event drew a strong turnout from across the community, reflecting the deep respect and affection held for Anne and her lasting contribution to the region’s arts and cultural life.
Anne Shepherdson OAM was a cornerstone of the Margaret River community and one of the founding figures of Arts Margaret River. Her decades-long dedication helped establish a thriving arts culture that continues to enrich the region today.
Shire President Julia Meldrum said Anne’s passing in 2024 was deeply felt throughout the community, and the Shire was proud to honour someone who made the region a better place to live.
“Establishing the Anne Shepherdson Courtyard at Nala Bardip Mia ensures her legacy lives on at the Shire’s most significant cultural space, while the upgrades to the space itself add to the versatility of the venue.”
Following the courtyard opening, a special Arts Margaret River Sunday Sundowner transformed the grassed area outside the HEART into a vibrant pop-up festival of circus and music. The event was supported with funding from the Shire’s Community Development & Events Grants and featured live entertainment, including Natural Wings, a multi-award-winning aerial dance theatre company.
