Community members over 50 are invited to take part in the 2026 Young Mentors Program, a friendly intergenerational learning initiative that helps seniors build confidence with digital technology
Delivered through the library with support from local students, the intergenerational program pairs older people with young mentors for personalised guidance on everyday digital tasks such as using smartphones and tablets, sending emails, managing settings, using apps, accessing online services and understanding social media. The free sessions are designed to be relaxed, practical and supportive. Each participant can choose what they would like help with, learn at their own pace and bring their own device so they can practise new skills straight away.
If you’re interested in taking part, the library is hosting an information session on Wednesday 14 October at 10.15am. This session is a simple chance to find out more, meet the team and ask any questions. Seniors who would like to join the Young Mentors Program will need to attend the information session before taking part.
Regular Young Mentors sessions will then be held on Wednesday 28 October, Wednesday 4 November, Wednesday 18 November and Wednesday 25 November from 10.15am to 11.45am. There will be no session on Wednesday 11 November due to Year 10 exams.
Past participants have shared how valuable the program can be, with one senior saying: “With a good mentor, it’s very easy to understand.” Student mentors have also described the experience as a rewarding way to help others, practise communication skills and connect with community members from a different generation.
The Young Mentors Program was developed by the eSafety Commissioner, Australia’s independent regulator for online safety, as part of the Be Connected initiative. It helps older Australians build digital confidence and navigate the online world more safely, while encouraging connection and shared learning between generations.
