Planning application, Kevill Road Margaret River
We have received a planning application for a Community Nursery at 33 (Lot 650) Kevill Road, Margaret River.

The Margaret River Community Nursery is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers.  The group has outgrown their current site on Clarke Road, which is shared with the Margaret River Community Garden and the Margaret River Regional Environment Centre, and in 2025 the Shire was asked to help investigate alternative locations.

In November 2025, Council voted to support leasing a portion of the old gravel pit site on Kevill Road to the Community Nursery, subject to planning approval.  This site was identified as potentially able to accommodate a nursery based on access to water and an environmental assessment, which showed that the selected area was ‘completely degraded’ and had been replanted with non-endemic Eastern States Blue Gums.

The proposal consists of the following:
  • Construction of a shed, fog house and shade houses and associated nursery infrastructure for the germination and production native plants for wholesale.
  • Construction of a parking area and site access from Kevill Road East.
  • The use nursery will be run by up to 20 volunteers on site from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturdays.
  • Wholesale plant collections approximately five times per week.
  • Customers will not be able to attend the site for retail sales.
  • The use may run up to 4 open days per year, which would be the only occasion where retail sales occur from site.

Due to the level of interest in the proposal the consultation period has been extended until Tuesday 22 September 2026. Find out more on our YourSay page.
