Please give beach nesting birds the space they need

Beach nesting birds are currently raising their young along our coastline, and a little extra space from beachgoers can make a big difference to their survival

A pair of Sooty Oystercatchers is currently nesting at Gnarabup Beach near White Elephant Beach Café, with the nest located near the base of the cliffs. To help protect the birds, signage has been installed around the nesting area. We’re asking the community to please avoid the area to give the baby birds a great start to life.

Another nest has been found at the Rivermouth. Volunteers have fenced off the nesting area and placed signs in the carpark and at the fence. Please give this area plenty of space too, to help give these birds the best chance of successfully raising their chicks.

Why it matters
Beach nesting birds lay their eggs directly on the sand and are highly sensitive to disturbance.
When people, dogs or other activity come too close, adult birds may be forced to leave their nest, exposing eggs or chicks to predators and other risks.
Giving nesting birds plenty of space helps them safely incubate eggs, care for chicks and successfully raise their young.

How you can help
When visiting local beaches:
•    Follow all signs and temporary fencing
•    Keep well away from nesting birds, nests and chicks
•    Choose another area of the beach to sit, play or set up
•    Never approach or disturb wildlife
If you see birds nesting at other beaches, please keep dogs under effective control.

Sharing our beaches
Our coastline is a special place enjoyed by locals, visitors and wildlife alike.
By respecting signage and giving nesting birds the space they need, we can help protect vulnerable coastal wildlife while ensuring everyone can continue to enjoy our beautiful beaches safely.

Thank you for helping look after our beaches and the wildlife that calls them home.
