Shire secures $5 million for Cowaramup roundabout

First step in delivering roundabout for Cowaramup

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River’s has secured $5 million in State Government funding to deliver a much-needed roundabout at the intersection of Bussell Highway and Roy Earl Drive in Cowaramup.

The funding has been awarded through the State Government's Regional Housing Support Fund (RHSF), an initiative to assist with delivering new housing and residential lot supply in regional WA.

Cowaramup is one of the fastest-growing towns in the Shire, with continued growth placing increasing pressure on the local road network. The new roundabout will ease pressure on Memorial Drive, improve traffic flow and support future residential development.

Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said securing the funding was a significant milestone for both Cowaramup and the wider region.

“As part of our ongoing advocacy, we've been working with Main Roads, the WA Planning Commission and developers to progress a roundabout at the intersection of Roy Earl Drive and Bussell Highway for several years," she said.

"The roundabout is not only critical for traffic management, it's also essential to unlocking new housing.  Without it, only a limited number of residential lots in the new developments can proceed.”

“Once in place the roundabout will facilitate the delivery of around 700 new homes which will cater for a diverse range of people, from first home buyers and key workers to young families and over fifty-fives”

The Shire President said while the timing of construction was yet to be confirmed, the project would now move into the detailed planning and design phase.

"This funding is the first step towards bringing this long-awaited roundabout to fruition.

“Building a roundabout on Bussell Highway is a significant project that will require extensive planning and close collaboration with Main Roads WA before construction can begin."

Developers, Goldfields Group and Yolk Property, will also contribute to its delivery.
