The Shire of Augusta Margaret River is responsible for the cemeteries and niche walls located in, Margaret River, Karridale, and the Lions Park in Cowaramup.

Burials are normally carried out by a Funeral Director who will arrange every aspect of the burial service for the family, and liaise with the Shire of Augusta Margaret River regarding burial location, date, and time.

Burial times for the Margaret River and Karridale Cemeteries are; Monday to Friday 9:00am to 2:30pm.

Funeral Director's Licence

Funeral Directors must hold a licence issued by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

An Application for Burial must be completed and received by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River at least 3 working days prior to the date and time of the burial. This application is for Funeral Directors only.

Ashes Interment Gravesite 

A family may choose to inter the ashes of a loved one into a family gravesite. There is no limit on the number of ashes urns that may be interred into a gravesite. The Grant of Right of Burial must be current and / or reviewed if expired, prior to the interment of ashes. The Grantee of the gravesite must also be current. The gravesite will be prepared by the Shire's burial contractor, family members are not permitted to inter ashes into a gravesite without Shire approval.

Grant of Right of Burial - Gravesite

A Grant of Right of Burial is a tenure agreement of a stated gravesite. This document gives the grant holder (Grantee) the right to conduct burials, inter ashes and erect a memorial on the gravesite. The Grantee can also deny any activity within the gravesite.

 A Grant is issued for 25 years with the right of renewal for a further 25 years. It is important that the Grantee makes provisions in a legal document (e.g. their Will) to allow transfer of the Grant to another person to ensure their wishes will be carried out.

A Grant must be current if additional burials, ashes interments and /or memorials works are to take place on the gravesite.

Monumental Mason's Licence 

Monumental Masons must hold a Licence issued by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

All memorial works must be approved by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, preferably through a monumental mason, prior to placement in the Cemetery. Memorials must comply with the Shire's Cemeteries Local Law Cemeteries Local Law.

Ashes Interment Niche Wall

The Shire is responsible for three (3) niche walls at the following locations, Margaret River Cemetery, Karridale Cemetery, and the Cowaramup Lions Park. All niche walls offer the option of single and double niche wall compartments. Niche wall compartment (Grants) are lifetime.
