Learn about the crossover subsidy scheme and the standard requirements for crossovers and battleaxe driveways.

Definitions

A crossover is the part of a driveway that crosses the verge, between the kerb and the property boundary.

A battleaxe block is a block of land situated behind another block, which has access to the street through a narrow battleaxe driveway that is shared by both properties.

Who takes responsibility for crossovers

Although crossovers are located within a road reserve, it is the responsibility of the property owner to construct and maintain the crossover.

Crossover subsidy scheme

About the crossover subsidy

Through a subsidy scheme, the Shire encourages owners to construct their first crossover on a residential property to the minimum standards.

To be eligible for the subsidy, the owner must submit a crossover application for assessment and construct the crossover to the Shire’s requirements.

Eligibility and standard requirements

Crossovers must be constructed in accordance with the Shire’s Standard Requirements for Crossovers and detail drawings for Urban and Rural Residential Crossovers (see documents below).

Crossover subsidy payments are only payable if a crossover is constructed with a sealed pavement surface and dimensions, as specified in the Shire’s Standard Requirements for Crossovers, and detail drawings for Urban and Rural Residential Crossovers.

The crossover subsidy is payable only to the property owner. The subsidy must be applied for within 6 months of completion of the residence.

The Shire subsidy is payable for sealed crossovers fronting sealed roads, providing all other aspects of the requirements are adhered to.

There is no subsidy applicable to additional crossovers on the one rateable property.
