Suicide was the second leading cause of death in Australian children aged 5–17 years in 2022, making it critical to identify young people at risk.
Approaches designed for adults don’t always work for children, which is why MindEd Margaret River is presenting the ASK Workshop: Assessing Suicide in Kids.
This online workshop gives participants increased awareness that children can be at risk of suicide, teaches them the warning signs to look for, and builds confidence to approach conversations about death and suicide in safe, age-appropriate ways.
Designed for professionals working with children aged 5–14 years, the workshop is delivered over two days, with pre-reading required before the live sessions. Participants will learn to:
- Talk about death with children
- Talk about suicide with children
- Use developmentally appropriate strategies and tools to identify young children at risk
- Quickly gather and organise information needed to assess risk
- Explore and consider protective factors to inform safety planning
- Navigate common challenges when working with parents and find possible solutions
Learning is supported through case studies, guided simulations, discussions, and hands-on practice using an assessment tool. Participants receive a risk assessment tool, a quick reference guide, and a certificate of completion.
