Specialist Advocacy Committee Proposed
Ensuring the state and federal government understand the needs of our community has never been more important with our growing population and increasing tourism putting more and more pressure on our community’s resources and infrastructure. .Shire President Julia Meldrum will therefore table a motion at this week’s council meeting which, if supported, will see a committee of council established to formalize the Shire’s advocacy approach and identify clear priorities. It’s suggested the proposed committee will consist of Councillors and Shire staff and will use insights from the community group/key stakeholders to confirm the outcomes which define success.
Led by Shire President Julia Meldrum, the Shire has already been proactively engaging with state and federal politicians to highlight critical community issues including emergency and affordable housing, long-term funding for social services, and investment in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
Most recently, the Shire President traveled to Canberra to lobby on behalf of our residents, and in recent months a series of meetings have been held with the Premier and State ministers.
Council will be asked to vote on the resolution at the July Council meeting on Wednesday.
EDITORS NOTE: This motion was unanimously endorsed by Council on 25 July 2024.
