Autumn Restricted Burning Period to commence

Landowners may undertake fuel reduction burns if they have a Permit to Burn

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River will move into the Autumn Restricted Burning Period on Sunday 29 March 2026.

From this date, landowners will be able to undertake fuel reduction burns (including garden refuse burns), provided they have a Permit to Burn and follow all Permit conditions, including notifying adjacent landowners, the Shire and DFES, DBCA within the required timeframes.

Campfires, firepits, solid fuel BBQs and pizza ovens are allowed with the landowner’s permission, as long as they are at least 3 metres away from any flammable material (including stumps or logs) and the fire is attended at all times.

On days with a Fire Danger Rating of High or above, no fires are permitted, and all Permits are suspended.

Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said that while cooler weather allowed the Shire to transition from the Prohibited Burning Period into the Restricted Burning Period, residents and visitors must remain cautious, particularly as Easter and the school holidays approach.

“Easter is a time when many people enjoy camping, but the Restricted Burning Period comes with strict rules around lighting fires to keep our community safe,” she said.

“Whether you live here or are just visiting, you need to ensure your actions do not start a bushfire. Always check the Fire Danger Rating, and if it’s hot or windy, just give it a miss.”

Permits to Burn are issued free of charge and are available from your local Fire Control Officer (FCO), details of which can be found on the Shire’s website. Up-to-date Fire Danger Ratings are available on the Emergency WA website
