Celebrate WA Seniors Week with free community events

Connecting and celebrating our seniors this November

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River will host several free community events to celebrate WA Seniors Week next month in collaboration with Arts Margaret River, Augusta Community Resource Centre and Margaret River Recreation Centre.

WA Seniors Week is held annually each November to recognise the important role older people play in the Western Australian community and celebrate their valuable contribution.

In Margaret River, seniors are invited to Nala Bardip Mia - Margaret River HEART on Monday 9 November to enjoy morning tea and a free film screening of The Piano Tuner, following Arts Margaret River’s popular weekly Young@HEART event.  Seniors can also attend Stay Strong, Stay Steady - a practical workshop covering strength and falls prevention at the Margaret River Recreation on Friday 13 November.  Afternoon tea is also provided.

In Augusta, the Shire has joined forces with the Augusta Community Resource Centre to host Living Well, Aging Well, a conversation about healthy aging followed by morning tea on Thursday 12 November. The free event is the latest in the Shire’s monthly community conversation series, which has already covered topics including online scams and end-of-life matters.

Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said the events aligned with the Shire’s commitment to building an age-friendly community.

“We know that regardless of your age, staying connected is important for people’s wellbeing,” said Shire President Jean-Rice.

“Everyone benefits when seniors have opportunities to participate in and contribute to community life.

“Their diverse knowledge, experience and perspectives enrich our community, which is why we encourage the inclusion of older people through events and initiatives throughout the year.

“We’re pleased to work with our partners to deliver these free events to celebrate WA Seniors Week and I encourage our older residents to come along, enjoy themselves and connect with others in a relaxed and welcoming environment.”
