We’d love to hear from our community on a new draft Agricultural Policy designed to strengthen support for local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the region.
Agriculture plays a vital role in the Shire’s identity and economy. It underpins local food security, supports sustainable land management, and fosters a strong sense of community belonging for farming families.
Endorsed for public consultation at the Council meeting on 24 September 2025, the draft Policy outlines a strategic framework to ensure the Shire’s decisions and operations continue to support a resilient, thriving, and sustainable agriculture sector.
The draft Policy sets out clear objectives, including:
- Supporting evidence-based decision making on agricultural matters
- Recognising and valuing farmers as an integral part of the community
- Improving access to infrastructure, resources, and professional development
- Encouraging collaboration with government agencies
- Promoting synergy between farming and ecological outcomes
- Positioning the region as a leader in sustainable agricultural practices.
The draft Policy has been shaped through an extensive engagement process, including a series of Agriculture Roundtables held throughout 2024 and 2025. These sessions provided a platform for local farmers and industry representatives to share their insights, concerns, and aspirations for the future of agriculture in the region.
A Stakeholder Engagement Report summarising the outcomes of this consultation is now available on the project Your Say page.
The initiative was formally set in motion on 28 February 2024, following a resolution of Council that aligned with a motion passed at the General Meeting of Electors held on 24 January 2024. The Agricultural Policy is also designed to complement the Shire’s Local Planning Strategy 2022 and associated planning schemes.
Community members are encouraged to review the draft and complete a short feedback form. Find out more by visiting www.yoursay.amrshire.wa.gov.au/agricultural-policy
