Cowaramup Precinct Plan consultation now open

Two key proposals set to shape how people move through Cowaramup are now open for community comment.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 25 March, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Council approved the draft Cowaramup Precinct Plan for advertising.

The Plan provides concept plans for improvements to the road network along Bussell Highway and on surrounding streets connecting to Bussell Highway. It also provides guidance on future development of commercial lots through the Cowaramup Design Guidelines.

The consultation will also ask the Cowaramup community to share their opinions on a potential perimeter road around the town.

Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said that the outcomes of the Precinct Plan and the perimeter road consultation will guide how pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles move through Cowaramup for years to come.

“We’re seeking community feedback to ensure these proposals reflect local priorities and supports a safe, well-connected town,” said President Jean-Rice.

“The intent of the Precinct Plan is to provide the Cowaramup community with a clear expectation on the future of the townsite and provide us with a basis for ongoing liaison with and advocacy to Main Roads WA.

“We’re also asking the community to share their views on the possibility of a perimeter road, similar to the one in Margaret River, so we can pass this feedback on to Main Roads.

“Community feedback will help Main Roads understand the level of support for exploring this option further and will inform their consideration of whether the project should move to the feasibility stage.

“This is an important consultation and will shape the way Cowaramup grows into the future, so I really encourage the community to take the opportunity to have their say,” said President Jean-Rice.

During the development of the Plan, the Shire has been working closely with the Cowaramup Streetscape Working Group, a group of Cowaramup residents who have given feedback, shared local insights and helped inform the draft Plan.

Working group member and long-standing Cowaramup resident Neil Earl, who represents the Cowaramup Halls, Reserves and Residents Association on the group, said that the Precinct Plan has been a joint effort.

“We’ve been collaborating with the Shire team for the past year on these plans,” he said.

“It’s so important that we put the safety of our kids and community members first as our town rapidly grows, and I think that intent is reflected in the end product.

“We believe the Precinct Plan is a step in the right direction for Cowaramup. I’m keen to hear what the rest of the community thinks of it.”

The consultation will be open until 4pm on 4 May 2026. Community members are encouraged to have their say by visiting our Your Say page.

Shire officers and members of the Cowaramup Streetscape Working Group will be available to answer questions at two drop-in sessions in Cowaramup in April.
