Groms step up for the coast at Grunters Beach

The Shire of Augusta of Margaret River has teamed up with local grassroots groups and the youth in our community in the activation of a coastal restoration project.

Coordinated by Nature Conservation Margaret River, the World Surf League’s We Are One Ocean event held at Grunters Beach attracted 50 participants including Margaret River Coastal Resident Association volunteers, Cowaramup Boardriders, Line in the Sand and YETI.

The group undertook brushing of dunes to help protect the fragile dune system in the area. This involved laying down branches across sections of dune to prevent people from walking in certain areas to protect vegetation while it establishes.

David Nicholson, Shire Manager of Asset Services, said their efforts will help redefine access to the beach and rehabilitate and restore areas that have already been disturbed.

“The Margaret River Region is a biodiversity hotspot known for its natural beauty, pristine beaches and world-class waves,” Mr Nicholson said.

“The whole community works together to help protect this unique environment and we all have a responsibility to give back to the coastline that gives so much to us all. It’s inspiring to see our local groms stepping up and working together to leave a positive impact on the environment.”

Thank you to the passionate community members, local groups and WSL team who were involved.
