Margaret River Main Street Wins AILA Award

The Shire’s Margaret River Main Street Makeover project has won the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) 2023 WA Award of Excellence for Civic Landscape.

Completed in late 2020, the Main Street Makeover has delivered generous, multipurpose spaces that enhance the quality of life for locals and offer engaging experiences for visitors. This outcome is a testament to the strong collaborative approach between the Hassell design team and the Shire over several years in the making of this project.

With innovative approaches to traffic management and water-sensitive urban design, the landscape architecture uses endemic planting, an augmented tree canopy, public art, interpretive storytelling and robust local materials to reinforce local character and identity and substantially improve the safety and amenity of this vibrant and well-loved main street.

The year-long project delivered a number of improvements above and below ground. We're proud of this truly local project, with 94% of the total project budget spent within the South West (and of this, 45% spent on tradies and businesses based within the Shire of Augusta Margaret River).

This project was made possible with funding from the State Government of WA and our ratepayers. Thank you Hassell, Minister for Small Business Hon. Jackie Jarvis MLC, Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC and the South West Development Commission.
