Margaret River Swim School celebrated for innovation and inclusion
Margaret River Swim School has earned national recognition, taking out the title of WA’s Best Regional Swim School (under 1,000 lessons per week) and securing a place among Australia’s top finalists at the 2025 Australian Swim Schools Association (ASSA) Awards of Excellence.Run by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River at the Margaret River Recreation Centre, the swim school was highly commended for its innovation, inclusion and excellence in swim education, standing out among programs across the country.
Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said being recognised as one of Australia’s best reflects the Shire’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, accessible recreation opportunities for all residents.
“This achievement is a testament to the passion and professionalism of our local team,” President Jean-Rice said.
“They’ve created a program that welcomes everyone, and their success shows what’s possible when care and community sit at the heart of what we do. It’s a shining example of how local government initiatives can make a national impact.”
Shire Director Sustainable Economy and Communities Nick Byrne said the award highlights the team’s dedication and vision in developing a swim school that is inclusive, sustainable and tailored to meet the needs of all who live, work and play in our Shire.
“This is a win for our instructors, our families and our whole community. It shows that a regional program can deliver world-class outcomes with the right values, passion and leadership,” Mr Byrne said.
Since reopening the centre last year, the school has grown to more than 900 enrolments per term, offering over 200 lessons per week.
Programs cater to a wide range of community needs, including infant, school-aged, adult, access and inclusion, home school, and migrant swim programs. The team also offers private low-sensory sessions to support students who benefit from additional learning support.
Building on its commitment to community safety, the Swim School will continue its beach-based programs during Term 1, providing a unique dual-environment learning model that reinforces surf and ocean safety – an essential life skill for coastal communities like Margaret River.
