Restricted Burning Period to Begin This Weekend

Permit to Burn required from Sunday 9 November

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River will enter the Restricted Burning Period (Spring/Summer) this weekend, which means from 12.01am on Sunday 9 November until 22 December 2025 (unless otherwise advised), no one may light a fire in the open air without a valid Permit to Burn. This includes any fires that were started prior to Sunday that may still be burning on or after Sunday morning.

You may burn one small pile (up to 1m³) of garden refuse without a Permit between 6pm and 11pm, as long as it’s fully extinguished by midnight.

Additionally, no fires are allowed at any time when the Fire Danger Rating is HIGH or above, or during a Total Fire Ban (TFB).

Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said it was vital that everyone does the right thing to keep our community safe during bushfire season.

“Whether you’re a resident or visitor, stay informed and follow the rules. You don’t want your actions to cause a bushfire.  If you’re in any doubt, just don’t light a fire,” she said.

President Jean-Rice said Permits are available from local Fire Control Officers (FCO) – listed on the Shire website – and are issued free of charge.

“When applying for a Permit to Burn you’ll need to advise of the size of your burn, what you’re burning and the address of your burn,” she explained.

“Then when you’re ready, you will need to register your Permit to Burn with the Shire, DBCA and DFES,  using the numbers listed on your Permit, and make sure you let your neighbours know too.” she added.

“And if you haven’t already, please prepare your property, make a bushfire plan, and stay informed by downloading the Emergency WA app or listening to ABC local radio."
