Delivering warmth to the community
Margaret River Rotary has donated five waterproof sleeping bags to the Shire of Augusta Margaret River to assist people experiencing homelessness in the local community.
The sleeping bags were delivered to the Shire’s Rangers who will be keep them in their vehicles to be distributed to people they encounter who are experiencing homelessness and need a sleeping bag.
Margaret River Rotary President Charles Johnson AM said the donation was a practical way to support vulnerable members of the community.
“We hope these sleeping bags will be of real benefit to people in desperate need within our community,” Mr Johnson said.
“Having the sleeping bags readily available means that they can be provided directly to someone who needs immediate assistance.”
The initiative reflects Margaret River Rotary’s continuing commitment to practical, community-focused service and collaboration with local organisations.
Shire of Augusta Margaret River Acting Shire President Tracye Muir said the Shire was grateful to Margaret River Rotary for its generous donation and ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the community.
"Our Rangers are often among the first people to come into contact with people sleeping rough, so having these sleeping bags on hand means they can provide immediate assistance while helping connect people with support services.
"Many people think homelessness doesn't exist in Augusta-Margaret River yet data gathered during Connections Week earlier this year identified at least 34 individuals and nine families experiencing homelessness across our Shire.
"While housing sits outside the formal responsibilities of local government, we continue to advocate to the State Government for greater investment in housing and support services that will help address homelessness."
