The Safer Speeds Trial is now well underway, with several key areas already transitioned to new, safer speed limits.
These changes are now in place across Cowaramup, Prevelly, Gnarabup, Augusta, Witchcliffe and Karridale. Wallcliffe Road, east of Caves Road, has been reduced to 80 km/h as part of the current Margaret River rollout.Shire President Julia Jean-Rice said the changes are grounded in evidence, considered community feedback and will be reviewed at regular intervals during the three-year trial.
“We understand that change can be frustrating, especially when people are used to driving a certain route at higher speeds,” Ms Jeann-Rice said. “But we are committed to making our roads safer and even small changes can lead to meaningful outcomes.”
Community input has played a key role in shaping the trial. In late 2022, residents were invited to nominate local roads they felt would benefit from a speed limit reduction. In late 2024, further consultation was carried out on the detailed proposals. On average across all road types, a majority (58%) of respondents supported reducing speed limits. This feedback helped inform where and how changes would be rolled out.
The trial will be reviewed after 12 months and residents will be encouraged to share their thoughts.
The Safer Speeds Trial is a partnership between the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and RAC, with implementation support from Main Roads WA.
Feedback can be provided at any time via Your Say. All feedback received will be considered as part of the 12-month review.
More information about the trial, including road maps, FAQs and evidence supporting the changes is available at Safer Speeds Trial.
