As part of the Shire’s ongoing coastal management program, sand nourishment works will be carried out at Gnarabup Beach from Tuesday 28 April to Friday 1 May
Sand nourishment involves placing sand back onto eroded areas of beach and dunes to help rebuild a natural buffer between the coastline and built assets. At Gnarabup, these works will protect the boat ramp, car park, access track, stairways and coastal walkways that provide important access to one of the most popular beaches in the Shire. The works are a key recommendation of the Shire’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan and form part of a long term, proactive approach to adapting to coastal change. Sand nourishment is considered a low impact, cost effective alternative to harder engineering solutions such as rock revetments, with lower social and environmental impacts.
Temporary closure of boat ramp
During the works period, the boat ramp will be temporarily closed and there will be short term access restrictions and increased vehicle and machinery movements in the immediate area. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption, and access will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.
The project is jointly funded by the Department of Transport and the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.
