Winter grading begins across the Shire

We have begun our annual winter grading program in preparation for the wetter months ahead

With more than 500km of unsealed roads in the Shire, winter grading is a key part of our maintenance schedule. It helps strengthen road surfaces, improve drainage and ensure safer driving conditions throughout winter.

Why winter grading matters

Winter grading is more effective than summer grading because:
• Moisture helps bind the gravel, creating a stronger and smoother surface
• Roads hold their shape longer once compacted
• Grading can repair minor damage from summer corrugations
• It allows us to maintain drains and shoulders

This means you’ll see an improvement in road surfaces during winter compared to the dry season.

Where we’re working

Our operators are now working across the district on their scheduled routes. Priority areas are based on:
• road condition
• drainage needs
• traffic volumes
• active community requests

Operators will move steadily through circuits, so some areas will be done sooner than others.

Drainage and shoulder works

Alongside winter grading, crews will be clearing drains and reshaping shoulders to help stormwater drain safely. This helps prevent washouts, potholes and erosion during periods of heavy rain.

What residents can expect

• Temporary loose material after grading
• Short delays or slow moving plant in some areas
• Better road stability once the surface has settled
