Where culture, art and ecology meet along the river
Join Wardandi custodians and acclaimed artists for a hands-on creative experience celebrating Wooditchup Bilya (Margaret River).Across four community workshops on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March, participants will learn directly from cultural leaders and professional artists while contributing to artworks that will form part of the Wooditchup Bilya Wongi – Margaret River Talking Land Art Trail which will launch with a free, family-friendly celebration on Saturday 14 March.
The Land Art workshops are guided by Wardandi cultural leaders and artists Nan Vivian Brockman Webb and Mitchella Hutchins, working alongside internationally recognised land artist Elaine Clocherty, and local land artist Mick Hart, while weaving workshops are led by local weaver Cynamon Aeria.
Together, they offer participants an opportunity to engage with storytelling, stewardship and creative practice grounded in connection to Country.
Choose between two creative streams. In the Land Art Workshops, create ephemeral artworks using natural materials and explore how art can express cultural and ecological stories of place. In the Weaving Workshops, contribute to a community installation of “Flying Birds” — celebrating the diverse bird life of the Margaret River — while learning fibre techniques, string-making and 'random' weaving.
Each workshop runs for two hours under the trees between the Margaret River Old Settlement and the river. Tickets cost $10 - no experience is required, all materials are provided, and morning or afternoon tea is included. All ages are welcome (children must be accompanied).
