New fencing protects dunes at Gracetown

If you’ve visited the beach at Gracetown lately you may have noticed the fantastic-looking beach fencing that has recently been installed at Swimmers Beach!

The beach fencing is part of a long-running, collaborative project between the Friends of Gracetown Cowaramup Bay, the Shire and Nature Conservation Margaret River to help protect dune vegetation at this popular beach.

The fence was constructed using recycled jarrah railway sleepers and thick marine-grade manila rope, and provides a visual barrier to remind beach users to stick to designated pathways to get to the beach, and to let the sensitive dune vegetation grow.

The fencing complements recent coastal planting and brushing work in Gracetown by the local community and school students – working together to help protect the coast!

If you would like to get involved in helping to protect your local environment, please contact the Shire’s Senior Environment and Landcare Officer, Hayley Bain at [email protected] or on 9780 5218 about joining a Friends of Reserves group.
