Are you bushfire ready?

The annual Firebreak Notice is sent to all land owners and sets out the requirements for property preparedness to assist in the control of fires and reduce the risk of fire to the community.

All required works must be completed prior to 1 December each year and maintained up to and including 12 May the following year.

Important new requirements - FAQs

The required minimum width of firebreaks has been increased from 2 metres to 3 metres for some properties in the Shire.

The change is needed to comply with Department of Fire and Emergency Services recommendations and best practice guidelines, and to ensure alignment with other local governments in Western Australia. It will also ensure that firebreaks are wide enough to accommodate a standard fire appliance.

Read this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) information sheet regarding the change to property firebreak requirements.

If you have any concerns regarding how the increased firebreak width may impact you, believe you may need to apply for a variation, or would like further information, please contact the Shire Rangers on 9780 5695, or email [email protected]

Variations to the Firebreak Notice

A Variation to the Firebreak Notice may be sought if one or more of the requirements of the Notice are unable to be met. This may be due to a variety of reasons including, but not limited to:

  • risk of soil erosion
  • topography or composition of the land
  • natural obstructions
  • environmental considerations

All applications must be made by the property owner or person authorised to act upon the owners behalf and must be submitted to the Shire by 16 November. An application form is available here. For further information regarding Variations, please contact Shire Rangers on 9780 5695.

You may burn one small heap of up to one (1) cubic metre of garden refuse during the Spring/Summer Restricted Burning Period, from 9 November to 22 December, between the the hours of 6:00pm to 11:00pm, without a permit.

Note: Restricted and Prohibited Burning Period dates are subject to change. Please check the Shire website to confirm dates prior to undertaking any burning.

Please Note: Campfires are NOT permitted on public land unless purpose built campfire pits have been provided by the owner of the land and permission to use them has been given (during Restricted Period only).
