The Local Planning Policy 26: Signage administers provisions for signs on private and public land that would be installed by individuals, companies, associations and groups other than the Local Government. The local planning scheme (Schedule 5 Table 1 of the Scheme) has however except Directional Signage from requiring planning approval but they do require a permit under the local Law.
The Signage on Public Land policy ISP 8 seek to balance the functional requirement to inform, warn and promote with the need to avoid the proliferation of signs on public land and maintain visual amenity that is in character with the surrounding townscape or landscape. Draft Standard Requirements specify the requirements for Directional Signs.
To be eligible for approval of a tourist directional sign, the attraction or service facility must be approved by the Shire for the use as indicated on the proposed sign. Application must be made on the Directional sign application form.
For Directional Signs along Caves Road, Bussell Highway and Brockman Highway Main Roads WA must be contacted as they are the regulating authority.
An approved business may be permitted to display ONE portable A Frame advertising sign to be displayed directly in front of the business it refers, under Activities in Thoroughfares and Public Places Local Law 2010, Section 3.2.
Business owners shall obtain a permit for A Frame Signage by applying for a license.
Temporary roadside event advertising is available for community based organisations (non-for-profit groups) and for events which are open to the whole community.
Banners can be erected in predetermined positions within the townsites of Margaret River, Cowaramup and Augusta and can be displayed up to 2 weeks prior to the event.
Banners should be constructed to a professional standard, meet the size criteria and eligibility criteria as outlined in the Community Banner Application Form.
