General information

Most proposed developments within the shire are assessed under the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Planning Scheme which:

  • aims to control and guide development and growth in a responsible manner; and
  • accommodates and responds to change.

Planning approval is required for any of the following application types:

  • Places with Heritage Significance
  • Changing the use of a building/premises
  • Increasing the floor area of an existing structure
  • Roof signs
  • Car parks or changes to the operation of car parks
  • Home Occupations (businesses conducted from home)
  • Three or more dwellings on a single site
  • All non-residential developments
  • Lapsed Development Approvals (approvals are generally valid for two years, after which a new application must be submitted)
  • Demolitions

The Shire is currently reviewing all Information Fact sheets which will be made available on the website when finalised.  For further information or to find out whether your proposal will require planning approval please contact the Planning Administration staff on 9780 5265 or 9780 5270.


Should you wish to make a complaint about development or use of land in the shire you will need to complete a Planning Complaints form and send it to Chief Executive Officer Shire of Augusta Margaret River PO Box 61 Margaret River WA 6285.

The Shire’s Legal Services Co-ordinator will investigate and respond to your complaint within 14 days of receipt of the complaint.
